Frequently asked questions

How is BMI calculated?

In metric units, BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². In imperial units, BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)².

What do the BMI categories mean?

The common adult ranges are: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5–24.9 normal, 25–29.9 overweight, and 30 or above obese. These are general guides, not diagnoses.

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

No. BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat and may be misleading for athletes, older adults, pregnant people and others. Treat it as a rough screening number only.
